With the Buffaloes ranked No. 16 in Tuesday night’s Playoff rankings release, Deion Sanders’ Colorado football program is very much in the mix. After guiding a club that went 4-8 in 2023 and barely 1-11 the year before his arrival in 2022, the great former cornerback has turned Boulder around very impressively.
Meanwhile the Dallas Cowboys are in a tailspin. Sanders’s previous NFL team has lost five straight games, three of which came by four or more points and stands just 3-7 on the season.
NFL speculations have revolved around Sanders since he started his coaching career. Jerry Jones has not taken any official action about the future of Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, but it is logical that his seat will be highly sought for without a major turn-about.
Sanders has denied any desire in professional coaching in the past, hence this is not his first trip around with NFL coaching speculations. During his Tuesday press conference ahead of Colorado’s game with Kansas, he was asked about the rumors about NFL and other college positions. While he didn’t say he wouldn’t have jumped to the league, he believes he’s content in Boulder.
“With my AD in here, you’re going to chat like that? Sanders quipped, “That’s so disrespectful,” regarding the rumors. “I find great satisfaction where I am, guy. I’m OK. I received a downing for a stand. I’m lounging about. I’m ok. I’m pleased. I become excited. Right where I am excites me. I really do love this place.
Sanders’s repeated insistence about wanting to remain in Colorado hasn’t stopped people close to him from weighing in. Michael Irvin, a former Cowboys teammate of Sanders, told Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd Tuesday that Coach Prime would welcome the job in Dallas should the team choose his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, next April. Of course, the draft occurs well after the NFL’s conventional coaching schedule changes, and Dak Prescott, the Cowboys have a franchise quarterback in the first year of a four-year, $240 million contract.
As Colorado strives for a Big 12 title and playoff berth, Sanders’ stock as a coach might never be better than it is right now. Given Shedeur and two-way standout Travis Hunter’s impending NFL draft entry following the season, the wild conjecture regarding Sanders’ coaching future is not surprising.
