SWAC Suspends 16 Players After Jackson State-Alabama State Brawl, Fines Schools

Over a postgame fight, the Southwestern Athletic Conference has penalized both Jackson State and Alabama State and handed one-game penalties to sixteen total players.

Following Saturday’s game in Montgomery, the league revealed on Monday that nine Alabama State players and seven Jackson State players had been punished for the incident. Both institutions paid fines totaling $25,000.
The Tigers visit Alcorn State while Prairie View A&M is hosted by Alabama State on Saturday.

Three of the players would also be punished for the season-ending game against Tuskegee on Thanksgiving Day, according to Alabama State vice president and athletic director, Dr. Jason Cable. Not named were the suspended players.

After the game, players started shoving and occasionally threw few blows.

“Acts of unsportsmanlike behavior have zero place in the sports of intercollegiate athletics and within the Southwestern Athletic Conference and we are quite disappointed to have had consecutive weeks of football competition negatively impacted by these unfortunate events,” SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland said.

“We will keep working with our membership to apply the required regulations and practices meant to discourage this kind of behavior. We will also keep enforcing a zero-tolerance policy for all actions judged to be unsportsmanlike and against the high degree of excellent sportsmanship we demand from all people connected to the athletics programs within our league.
