The free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2025-2026 school year will open on 1 December 2024 to provide important financial assistance to millions of students and families in the United States. This year, students are allowed to submit FAFSA, even though their parents’ identity has not yet been verified, which has removed a barrier for many families.

How to submit the FAFSA form

Submitting FAFSA is a simple process, but there are some important steps to ensure success. Here is a guide for applicants wishing to complete FAFSA for the upcoming school year:

1. Create your FSA ID: Both students and parents (if applied) must create an FSA ID that will serve as a digital signature and to reach the Federal Student Ed website.
2. Gather the required documents: Collect all the necessary documents, such as your social security number, recent federal income tax return, W-2s, records of income without tax, and bank statements.
3. Access the FAFSA form online: Access the FAFSA form by visiting Studentaid.gov. If necessary, you can also request a paper version.
4. Enter personal information: Provide your details, including name, date of birth, and social security numbers.
5. Enter the financial information: If qualified, import your tax information directly using IRS data-reproducing equipment.
6. List your schools: Enter the school code for the colleges you are applying to, making sure that they get your FAFSA information.
7. Determine the dependence position: Answer questions to determine if you are a dependent or independent student. Dependent students will need parents’ information.
8. Provide parents’ information (if applied): Dependent students have to include financial information of their parents. Parents without social security numbers can participate by entering zero.
9. Sign and submit: Use your FSA ID to sign the form electronically. Ensure that the signature of both the students and parents is fulfilled.
10. Review your confirmation: After submitting, you will get a confirmation page. Check it carefully that all details are correct.
